01The wind
The Cape Doctor earns its name. November through March, 30-knot SE winds are routine, 40-knot days happen weekly. If you've never ridden overpowered, you'll learn fast — or you'll sit on the beach.
The thermal builds through the day. Mornings can be light. By 2pm it's on. By 5pm it's occasionally too much. The rhythm rewards the afternoon session.
02Where to ride
Blouberg is the main stage. The Big Bay / Kite Beach corridor is where every pro has filmed a jump. Chop, not flat — and not for intermediates on their first overpowered day.
Langebaan, an hour north, is the flat-water alternative. Lagoon-sheltered, schools-friendly, still windy but without the Blouberg chop.
Dolphin Beach is a quieter launch with more space. Fewer people, same wind, worse coffee.
03Safety, seriously
Cape Town has sharks. Real ones. White sharks have been confirmed off Blouberg and a kiter was attacked in 2024. Ride where others are riding, watch the warning flags, and don't go down the line alone.
The wind can also turn bad quickly. The SE is stable — until a lenticular cloud forms over Table Mountain and the front shifts. Watch the sky. Locals watch it constantly for a reason.
04The non-kite hours
Table Mountain cable car, Kirstenbosch, the Cape Peninsula drive, winelands at Stellenbosch. Cape Town is the best non-kite kite destination on earth. Budget at least three no-wind days into your trip on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
03 questionsSharks, strong winds and cold water — yes, more than most kite spots. Ride with others, use a reputable school, know your limits, don't be shy about calling off a session.
December-January averages in the 25–35 knot range at Blouberg. 6m and 8m are your weapons. If you don't own anything under 9m, rent locally — shop networks are excellent.
May-August is the opposite season — frontal NW winds, smaller swell windows, colder. Not the best kite season, but one of the best surf seasons in the world.
