Engelberg.Europe's freeride capital.
An hour from Zürich airport sits a resort that consistently ranks as the Alps' most freeride-friendly. The Laub — a 1,200-metre north face accessible by cable car — is the sort of terrain that rearranges your definition of 'lift-accessed'.
Month by month, rated honestly.
Our own reliability rating, 0–10, based on open lifts, snow quality and crowds. Peak months are the ones to target.

01The Laub — why it matters
The Laub is a 40-degree, 1,200-metre-vertical north-east face that holds cold snow for weeks after storms. The drop-in is via cable car — no skin track, no bootpack — which is what makes it extraordinary. In no other European resort can you ride terrain this serious with a lift pass.
It is not a groomer, and it is not marked. The correct workflow: hire a local guide (Swiss Mountain Sports or Engelberg Guides), carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, and pick a day when visibility is good enough to see the sluff channels.
02Beyond the Laub
Galtiberg — a 2,000m top-to-bottom glacier descent ending in a village. Iconic, long, exposed, glacier-travel only.
Sunnig Grat — sunny-side off-piste, friendlier for intermediates on a pow day.
Titlis Glacier park — the lift-served park is modest. If park is your priority, go to Laax.
Jochpass area — groomers and mellow off-piste for warming up and non-freeride days.
03Town, food, lodging
Engelberg is a small working village, not a purpose-built resort. That means three or four good restaurants (Ristorante Spannort is our pick), a handful of bars, and no real scene. Perfect for the type of rider who wants early nights and dawn patrols.
Stay at the Ski Lodge Engelberg if budget allows — it's the freeride-community hub. Budget alternative: the Bellevue-Terminus.
04Getting there
Fly to Zürich (ZRH). Train directly from the airport to Engelberg station — about 90 minutes, one change at Lucerne. No car needed; the village is walkable.
Lift pass: the Titlis day pass covers all lifts. Multi-day is cheaper proportionally.
Frequently asked questions
03 questionsReasonably. The marked groomer terrain is modest — it's a freeride resort first. If you want variety of groomers, Laax or St. Anton are better. Engelberg shines when you have the skill to leave the piste.
Mid-January through mid-March for reliable powder. Early April for sunny days + long runs. Avoid peak school holidays (Feb) if you can.
Fatality-capable in poor conditions. Avalanche debris runs the entire fall line; tree wells exist in the lower sections. Go with a guide every single time, no exceptions.
